Today we're talking mythology here on Chris Can't Write Good. In class we spent the last few weeks learning about mythology, the history of its study, and how to create modern day myths. Creating my own myth was a huge headache for me. Myths are things that are traditionally made collaboratively over many generations. Each teller adds a little something to them before passing them down. However, making my own myth was challenging because even though I am a creative writer, the creative part is the hardest for me. My biggest hurdle is figuring out what to write about. Once I figure it out, then I have no issues bringing something to life with my words. I literally tried out probably six or seven different stories and protagonists before I settled on Robert and the God of Dreams. Initially, I was working with a story about a demon that haunted humanity. It's no secret that my myth is about substance abuse and recovery. I think changing my angle on how I viewed addiction really helped me create a good myth. I learned so much from this experience. I think number one is that I became adept at using the Wix website creation tool. This will allow me to create fun and engaging websites for my students to use in class. I also think it would be so cool to challenge my students to create their own websites. As digital natives, more so than me at least, I think this could prove valuable to their growth and potentially to their career prospects. Well, that about wraps it up for this post. I hope all of you have a great day! Do something mythic!

Hello Chris, your struggles concerning the myth are incredibly relatable. Creative pursuits always take an enormous amount of effort, especially on the part of an invested artist. It is, honestly, asking a lot to make someone create a myth out of whole cloth. How can one person emulate a thousand hands over a thousand years? Drawing on a dozen different sources of inspiration is a good substitute though, and it sounds like you managed to make something to be proud of. It is also impressive that you wrangled something out of Wix. I used it as well, but it is the opposite end of the spectrum to Google Sites. The amount of options of customization can intimidate anyone, and it can surely distract an amateur graphic designer. I wonder if students would be able to handle it as an effective tool, as the next generations are tech savvy—but not technically proficient. You might have to provide a demo at first, but I'm sure they'll be able to pick it up quickly.
ReplyDeleteHey Chris!
ReplyDeleteI am honestly surprised to read that the creative aspect of writing is the hardest part for you since I see you as a very creative person. I remember you showed me your myth website, and I was in awe of how detailed it was! You didn’t even have to explain how long it took you to complete everything; I can tell that you poured your blood, sweat, and tears onto it. Truly, your hard work paid off. I am glad that this served as a learning experience as well. The links you provided regarding addiction were very helpful. The Wix website seemed very intimidating to me, but you made it seem like the best option. I am very excited for your future students who will definitely benefit from your creativity. Their minds will be able to soar freely! Creating challenging projects and assignments for students is a challenge within itself, but it will be a rewarding experience for you and your students. Great post!
